BUSHFIRE SARKING WITH A FLAMMABILITY INDEX OF 5 OR LESS

BAL-12.5 UP TO BAL-40 SARKING ISSUE

Whilst we have your attention we would like to take a minute to raise an issue which we see as being a major flaw in the new BAL laws which we believe may be putting properties and lives at risk;

We have learnt a lot about buildings in bushfires in the past 6 months and feel we have a ‘duty of care’ to raise the issue of sarking for all BAL zones beneath ‘Flame Zone’.

The code calls for nothing more than standard sarking to protect the roof space. This sarking is referred to as having a flammability index of not more than 5 when tested to AS1530.2 which is somehow meant to protect against ‘severe’ ember attack.

We would suggest that it gives no protection at all and will in fact add to the fire load in a roof possibly even starting the fire once the metal roof heats up.

Please watch this comparison video and make your own decisions. The link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJFctkWl9Rk please let me know what you think?
